Kingdom to Serve as Primary Bridge Between Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe
The Kingdom of Bahrain is set to significantly bolster its position as a global logistics and aviation gateway following a series of strategic investment agreements. These developments move the Kingdom’s “Gateway Gulf” commitments into a new operational phase, reinforcing its role as a vital bridge connecting Southeast Asian markets with the Middle East and Europe.
A central component of this expansion is the upcoming launch of daily flight services by AirAsia X, scheduled to begin on June 26, 2026. The airline will operate daily routes linking Kuala Lumpur to Bahrain, with onward connections to London Gatwick. This move is expected to transform Bahrain International Airport into a regional hub for long-haul low-cost travel, facilitating smoother transit for passengers and cargo alike.
H.E. Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Minister of Finance and National Economy, emphasized that these investments are designed to deliver tangible economic benefits across multiple sectors. Beyond passenger travel, the parent group of AirAsia, Capital A, is expected to scale its broader aviation businesses within the Kingdom. This includes the full integration of Teleport, their logistics arm which has already commenced operations, alongside new maintenance and engineering activities. This expansion is projected to create numerous direct employment opportunities in the aviation, tourism, and hospitality sectors.
The Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, H.E. Dr. Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, noted that the confirmed daily operations and secured commercial rights on the Bahrain–London sector shift the Kingdom’s aviation ambitions from the planning stage to full-scale implementation. By embedding Bahrain more firmly into long-haul air corridors, the Kingdom is capitalizing on its geographic advantage to attract international investors looking for efficient access to both Eastern and Western markets. This strategic alignment is a cornerstone of Bahrain’s broader economic vision, aiming for a diversified economy driven by high-value services and global connectivity.
